Top 3 Benefits Of The 1 In, 1 Out Rule

According to Vogue, we should all own around 74 articles of clothing and 20 outfits in total. But many of us own a lot more than that.

It would be fine if we actually wore all of them. But most of those garments sit in our closet gathering dust then you start to notice that weird smell that happens when something isn't worn in a while.

So let's say you achieve the goal of having the right items in your closet. Now how do you maintain? One great option is the 1 in, 1 out rule because it's simple and useful. Keep reading while I share with you 3 reasons why the 1 in, 1 out rule helps you stay organized.

1. It Helps You Become A More Savvy Buyer

Once you declutter items you don't want, don't need, and don't use from your closet, that doesn't mean you're finished. Maintenance is important to help you stay organized.

Part of maintenance is making sure you put items back where they belong. But another part is to ensure you don't bring in more clutter by shopping. Especially when you're being triggered.

Knowing you have to eliminate one item before you can buy something else can help you think before you buy.

2. It Helps You Continue To Declutter Items

If you know that in order to buy something new you'll have to get rid of an item, it forces you to keep decluttering. I tend to recommend going through your wardrobe (and every other space in your home) at least once a year.

Decluttering helps you to take stock of what you own and helps you decide whether it's benefiting you or not. I find that once my clients know how to declutter effectively, it becomes easier for them to let go of items that aren't supporting them.

The less you own, the easier it is to stay organized.

3. It's Easy

I always advise my clients to keep their systems as simple as possible. Really, a 5-year-old should be able to figure out the system.

The harder you make things for yourself, the less likely it is you'll follow through. Because it's too hard.

The 1 in, 1 out system is very easy for anyone to follow. And it works.

It's Time For A Change

Even if you've tried to get organized in the past and it hasn't worked, adopting just one new habit will lead you to new changes and less stress. And you deserve to live a life that's easy while surrounded by items you love and cherish.
